What happens during a plant turnaround
A planned turnaround creates a defined window to inspect, maintain, repair or modify equipment and systems that cannot be released during normal production. The mechanical package may combine boilermaking, millwright services, industrial piping and structural steel.
A practical shutdown framework includes:
- Scope development: establish equipment, work packages, technical requirements, quantities, interfaces and acceptance criteria.
- Readiness planning: confirm drawings, materials, partner scopes, access, lifting, isolation, permits, inspection points and labour needs.
- Execution control: coordinate work fronts, progress, quality records, changing conditions and handoffs within the approved schedule.
- Testing and handback: complete assigned inspections, tests, deficiency resolution and turnover documentation before return to service.
The owner remains responsible for plant operating decisions and the authorities defined in the shutdown plan. CNC’s role is the mechanical field scope and coordination awarded to it.
Heavy-equipment handling and exchanger work
CNC’s boilermaking group develops lifting plans for heavy-equipment handling when that requirement is part of the approved scope. The company also documents ownership of equipment used to extract heat-exchanger bundles, reducing reliance on an externally sourced extractor for qualifying exchanger-maintenance work.

Documented turnaround experience

Build a shutdown RFQ
Provide the equipment and line list, preliminary schedule, work packages, drawings, known conditions, quantities, lift data, isolation plan, inspection points and turnover requirements. Identify owner-supplied materials, specialist partners, site onboarding, shift expectations, access and the target return-to-service milestone.
